“I Didn’t Evolve. God Made Me!”

Clearly, we have some educating to do. [What are they teaching in science class?]  This article tells about a US Congresssman who dismisses evolution and about scary percentages of Americans who do also.  We’ve always thought the sticking point is time.  If people could embrace the colossal spans of time involved (billions of years instead of 6,000), evolution would make sense to them.  The point is that if the public is this weak on science, how can we expect them to understand nuclear power, nutrition, health care, population, birth control, climate change, peak oil,  etc?

  2. The really sad thing is that these people take everything so literally that they say stupid stuff like this. Many religious folk have suggested the Book of Genesis can really be seen as metaphorical. The “days” mentioned in the book could be days as God knows them, not as we know them. I.e. a day for God might be millions of years for us. If they wanted to find a way to reconcile Genesis and evolution, it could be done. But they really don’t. And this is not because they are so committed to God or to the literal veracity of the Bible. They do it to feed their own egos by proclaiming that they are right and all the rest of us are wrong. Makes them feel important.

  3. I think they also do it because Genesis tells them they have “dominion over nature” and that means they can pretty much do what they want with animals, plants, and the environment.

  4. You are Elitists. If they believe something other thAn you do, they are simple and unable to understand other issues. Your comments indicate angst with Judeo Christian beliefs. What about Taoists, Hindus, Sikhs or Muslims. None of them believe in evolution. Are they “simple”?
Walter you are politicizing this issue and it is very weak.

I am getting sick of reading your blog. Your snobbiness (sp?) Really comes throuGh. You really are an eletist.
